The American Legion Scholarship Programs

Education is the cornerstone upon which the future of this nation is built. Where there are good schools, we find good citizens. In fact, education is the first requisite of good citizenship. Reliable studies show many American students are unaware of all the financial assistance available to them in pursuit of higher education. The American Legion's Scholarship Programs were created to fill that void, and to promote and provide programs that encourage children to make use of their education opportunities.

Scholarship recipients were: Jenny Knowles, daughter of Richard Brown and Sherry Knowles of Greene, Brittany Duncan, daughter of James and Anne Duncan of Greene and Katelyn Beeckel, daughter of Peter and Caron Beeckel of Turner.

Pictured from left to right are: Shirley and Daniel DiMambro presenting a check to Jenny Knowles, Chaplain Paul Bernard presenting a check to Katelyn Beeckel and Jim and Sylvia Palmer presenting a check to Brittany Duncan.

The newly revitalized Turner Memorial Post 111 received three applications for scholarships from Leavitt High School students for the upcoming year. The post being in its infancy stage has not yet had a fund raiser and was unable to meet the scholarship request. Chaplain and Executive Officer Paul R. Bernard felt the need to reach out for assistance and spoke with a fellow comrade and member of the post, who was a founding father of the Maine Antique Vehicle Restoration Club, known as the Mavrecs, a non-profit club, formed in 1999, by founding members, Jim & Sylvia Palmer and Daniel and Shirley DiMambro. On behalf of the club, DiMambro stated that helping the American Legions Scholarship Program was a worthy cause approved by the Maverics. “We are forever mindful of our commitment to the education of our youth" stated Dimambro. Dimambro also stated; "For the Good of the Legion" we must work together to implement the American Legion Programs within our communities. The Chaplain stated that one of the responsibilities of being on the Executive Committee is being responsible for the government and management of the Post which includes its success in implementing American Legion Programs and the Scholarship Program is only one of our extremely important goals as the Legion Family.

Leavitt high School students, Katelyn C. Beeckel of Turner, Brittany A. Duncan and Jenny L. Knowles both of Greene all received a $100.00 scholarship. Beeckel plans on attending Bishop’s University, Duncan plans on attending Simmon’s College in Boston, and Knowles will attend the University of Maine in Augusta.

The Maverics are a State of Maine club organized for the hobbyist on a budget that has a desire to be involved in car shows, cruise nights, the annual awesome clambake in Naples along with their traditional Christmas party. The only requirement is to have a vehicle that is at least 15 plus years old.

On Thursday July 19th, 2007 Jenny Knowles, Graduating Class of 2007, Leavitt High School dropped by the registered office to drop by a "Thank You" card with a graduating picture.d: Turner Memorial Post 111 / The Mavrecs
