Sunday Morning Breakfast

It's a proven fact that eating meals together strengthens families and its no different for the American Legion Family.

The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University consistently finds that the more often children eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use drugs.

American Legion Commander, Ed Nadeau, Harry J. Conway Post 135 Sabattus is a firm believer that this is also applicable to the Legion Family. The Sabattus Post began their monthly Sunday morning breakfast program again on February 3rd, 2008, and had well over a hundred people attend. It was a great success to say the least.

As the 3rd District Public Relations Officer I just had to drop in to see for myself. Here's what I found. Upon entering at around 7:30am I found that people were already filling up the room. Within minutes Commander Ed Nadeau surprised long time Legionnaire, Bert Dutil with the famous birthday pancake. The difference between a birthday cake and birthday pancake is you only have to place one candle on the birthday pancake eliminating the infamous question; "How Old Are You". The birthday pancake represents, "One Year at a Time".

Afterwards we were blessed with the Red Hat Brigade. I mean, Red Hat Society. For those of you who don't know, the Red Hat Society is a social organization where there is fun after fifty for women of all walks of life. These ladies let go and have fun and go for the gusto. If you look closely at our Red Hat Society ladies you'll notice allot of purple. What's the purple about? Purple perks is an individual value added membership program within the Red Hat Society. When dressed in purple these ladies are to receive the royal treatment wherever they go. We'll you can bet that they received the royal treatment at post 135.

In the kitchen working I found the Americanism Officer, Joe Michaud and 1st Vice Al Harvey working hard making sure everything ran smooth. However when they saw the camera, yup, they hammed it up. Click on the pictures to enlarge them and take a look at Korean Veteran Arthur Paradis of Post 22 loading up his plate. I had home fries, eggs, french toast, toast with meat and gravy, sausages, and coffee. I could have had a muffin too but I was feeling a little rounded around the waist. Wally Wright, past American Legion Commander and "62" year member of the American Legion Family enjoyed the breakfast and the conversation. I enjoyed listening to him telling us about the history of the post.

In closing, all I can say is, if you missed it this month mark it on your calendar for next month. The first Sunday of the month. Sincerely; Paul R. Bernard, Public Relations Officer, 3rd District
