Boy Scout, troop cleaning up cemetery
Friday, November 23, 2007

AUBURN - The New Auburn American Legion Post 153-sponsored Boy Scout Troop visited the Briggs Cemetery on Turner Street on November 11 to replace the flags on veterans' graves.

The cemetery was chosen by Boy Scout Daniel Poulin as his Eagle Scout project. Recently Murphy R.E. and Son Monuments, Scout representatives and Norman Rose repaired more than 80 percent of the monuments and stones.
Scoutmaster Ronald Poulin, father of Daniel, and Assistant Scoutmaster Dan Trouant and other Scouts have been assisting. Fallen graves have been leveled and brush and leaves cleared. Poulin and his troop will continue the work until snow flies.
In December they will make some 200 Christmas gifts for the veterans at Togus and for nursing homes when they carol during the holidays.

Scouts thank veterans in variety of ways
Tuesday, December 11, 2007

AUBURN - Edward Little High School, Washburn and East Auburn Elementary schools were approached by Boy Scout Troop 153, sponsored by New Auburn American Legion Post 153, requesting items for service men and women in Iraq. The troop said response was overwhelming.

Christmas cards were made at Edward Little High School to be signed and shipped in a box to Iraq to be given out specially to veterans who do not receive mail.
As Christmas approaches, the Boy Scouts are also preparing more than 200 handmade gifts to be given to veterans at Togus on Christmas morning.
Department of Maine American Legion Americanism Officer Edith Lemieux, also a commissioner with Scout Troop 153, her husband, Raymond Lemieux, Marine Corps League Central Maine Detachment commandant, and the Silver Tones provided an afternoon of entertainment at Togus recently.
Nursing homes are also on the agenda for the Scouts, who will carol and pass out handmade gifts.
Special visits will be made to veterans by New Auburn Legion 153 First Vice Commander Raymond Lemieux and the Scouts to hand them a small flag saying "thank you."

Scouts collect, pack boxes headed for Iraq
Wednesday, December 26, 2007

AUBURN - New Auburn American Legion Post 153 Boy Scouts were among the collectors and packers who took part in the "Iraq Express" project at the post. The boys who had collected at Edward Little High School, Washburn and East Auburn schools met at the post ad helped pack the items, which filled about 114 boxes.
Two soldiers from Fort Bragg, New York, made the trip here to help and, when all was packed, they were placed in a large U-haul truck, which was transported back to Fort Bragg, loaded in a military transport plane and taken to Iraq.
It is one of the projects the troop does every year for veterans. They also visit nursing homes and send Christmas cards.
Other projects include training, hiking, camping and first aid. They also do other community work for which they receive recognition. Boys ages 11 to 18 years are welcome to join.

If interested, call Scoutmaster Ronald Poulin at 784-2875 or Scout Representative Raymond Lemieux at 784-0656.
